Pony Express Supplementary Regulations – Denman MCC
The Denman Motor Cycle club conducts race days by the Manual of Motorcycle Sport.
Our race days are family friendly and intended for the enjoyment of all who love natural terrain riding of any skill level.
We have prepared these sup regs with intention to give an idea of what pony express is about and to help express our expectations of riders. Intended as a guide and vary from event to event.
General Club Rules also apply - especially respect of Landholder’s property.

- Pony Express is a form of cross country racing.
- Teams event for two riders, except ironman class.
- Duration 5 hours, except Ironman = 4 hours. Race time may be shortened at discretion of COC if conditions change.
- Course: natural terrain approx 13 km in length of varying terrain – open, hilly, rocky, trees, grassy, etc.
- Class grading: team is entered into class of highest graded rider in team. Riders may enter a class but are subject to possible re-grading by officials on the day.
- Classes: Ironman, Expert, Clubman, Over 35’s, Masters (Over 45)
- Teams: two riders with either one or two bikes; team may complete race sharing one bike should one break down. The intent for teams is to equally share the riding.
- Start procedure is explained at rider’s brief: dead engine, legs straddling front wheel, facing rear of bike.
- 2 minute interval between classes.
- Clock (analogue) displays RACE TIME ie starts at 12:00 and finish time for ironman 4:00 and teams 5:00.
- Finishing: must complete last lap (ie be recorded after finish time).: rider can wait outside chicane for finish time if not wanting to put in another lap.
- Riding Numbers: Scoring is manual. It is the rider’s responsibility to ensure number is visible and scorers have registered them.
- Riders must walk through scoring chicane in 1st gear. Penalties apply for breaches.
- Points: as per Manual of Motorcycle Sport.
- Tagging: riders must tag in designated changeover area. After changeover, riders must give way to riders already on track. Waiting rider must wait OUTSIDE the changeover area (in pits).
- Riders must follow the intent of the track. Anyone found taking intentional shortcuts will be disqualified. Slower riders are not to deliberately block faster riders from passing. Faster riders must pass a slower rider safely.
- Refuelling in pit area using ENVIROMATS.
- All participants are expected to compete in the spirit of the race and render assistance to fallen riders who have sustained a serious injury. Time credits can be given for assisting an injured rider.
- Penalties will be imposed for infringements which will be assessed at the discretion of the officials based on the severity and/or repeat nature of offence and may include time, lap or disqualification penalty.
